Second, I read somewhere that you can bring your own miniature bottles of liquor on the plane as long as they meet TSA requirements regarding liquid ounces. We will. Actually, I probably should have started with this tip, it’s that important.

Next, plan your finances beyond your adventure. Make sure you leave something for all the waiting bills to come home with. If possible, pay some of your larger bills in advance. It’s a relief to know you can spend the money in your bank account on your vacation without worrying about rent or car payments.

Speaking of money, don’t bother with traveler’s checks and fall victim to hidden fees and high rates when exchanging money. Use your ATM card for cash withdrawals instead. Get local currency and the math will be done for you.

Experiencing other cultures and seeing new things is a wonderful way to ensure the next generation grows up more empathetic and aware, and the world is a better place.

Whatever that number is, have you drunk your miniature bottles of liquor yet? Alright, let’s talk about the flight. I’ve written before against companies banning kids, like public restaurants, and there’s always similar talk about airlines – for the record, I’m against banning kids too. However, don’t let your child be the example of bad behavior that people point out (with the full understanding that sometimes parents can’t do anything about a fussy child – especially when it comes to changes in cabin pressure, which can cause this in young children’s ears).

Plan activities to keep kids occupied on the plane, such as reading, coloring and, of course, the tried-and-true standby mode of an iPad with games, videos and movies. The longer the flight, the more likely kids are to get restless during every single activity, even an electronic one. So bring options.

In addition, children are also allowed to carry a carry-on luggage. Have them pack a blanket, neck pillow, ear plugs and eye mask (if they wear them) and a favorite stuffed animal. Make them as comfortable as possible and let them sleep according to the time zone of your destination whenever possible (this goes for all of us, this adjustment in our bodies helps combat jet lag).

In terms of your actual goal, do everything you can, but pace yourself – only you know what your children can handle, so don’t push it. Take them to museums and natural wonders, visit places locals visit, and talk to strangers. After all, it’s not just the things that make a place, it’s the people who live there.

CONNECTION: Bashing dads is stupid, hurtful and bad for kids for

Travel is one of the greatest gifts parents can give their child. Nothing opens a person up to more possibilities and understanding than the moment they realize it is a small world after all (sends a check to Disney). Experiencing other cultures and seeing new things is a wonderful way to ensure the next generation grows up more empathetic and aware, and the world is a better place. It is the best souvenir you will ever find, although key chains also make a nice gift.

Consider this as my postcard.
